Certificate in Applied Journalism
The Staff Development Centre (SDC) of the University of Vocational Technology is now calling for applications for the 1st intake of the fee-levying short course titled "Certificate in Applied Journalism".
Media outlets emphasize heavily the skills and capacities of their journalists. Although several institutes in Sri Lanka provide education and training on journalism, media outlets often tend to criticize journalism graduates and other trained media professionals for their inadequate skills. This course is important for undergraduates who are following such degree programs with the aim of seeking employment in media outlets because they would be able to improve all the practical skills that were not fulfilled in their degree programs. So, undergraduates and graduates are one target group in this course. Journalists who are already employed in the media industry and any other professional with various educational levels can also participate in the program. If media firms need to develop newcomers’ skills, this is the most suitable course for them. In that way, the media outlets get the opportunity to employ individuals who have obtained essential basic training within a period of three months, without committing longer periods for diploma and degree programs. Another possibility is for any individual who wishes to enter the media firm or to be a media entrepreneur individual. Teachers who are teaching media subjects in schools are also one of the target groups in this course.
Thus, the contents of this certificate course focus on improving all the practical skills required to work in a media firm, media entrepreneurs, and school media teachers. It constitutes the fundamentals of the practical aspects of journalism.
