Steps have been taken to declare the upcoming September 19 as a day of mourning for Queen Elizabeth II.

According to the Presidential Media Unit, the President has issued an instruction to the Ministry of Public Administration and Internal Affairs in this regard.

Until then, it has been announced that the national flag will be flown at half-mast in government institutions until the upcoming 19th of September.

Queen Elizabeth II died yesterday at the age of 96 at her Balmoral estate after 70 years in power.

He suddenly fell ill and passed away yesterday while under medical observation.

In this regard, President Ranil Wickramasinghe who has expressed his condolences, has announced that "I express my deepest condolences to the British Royal Family, the British Government and the people of the United Kingdom on the death of Queen Elizabeth II, who was the head of the Commonwealth of Nations and the Queen of Sri Lanka from 1952-1972."

Meanwhile, it is noteworthy that a 2-minute silence was observed today (09) in the Parliament of Sri Lanka for Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away yesterday (08).
